Oppositional Defiant Disorder

a. How does it feel to be the parent of your child?
My son Maxi is eleven years old. It is very challenging to raise my child. I always thought that this stage would pass, but it has been going on for several years. Everyday consists of some type of disruptive behavior. He always throws tantrums, and seems to be angry at many things. He always causes trouble at school and the teacher struggle to keep him on task. He likes to deliberately anger people around him and blame others for his own mistakes.
b. How is your child developmentally the same or different from other children at the various ages?
My child is developmentally the same as other children at eleven years old. If he was in classroom with his peers, you would not be able to point out that he has a disorder. Normally, children have temper problems at ages two and three, but he never grew out of this stage. He continued to have temper problems, but it started to become more severe as my husband and I started working more.
c. What professionals/agencies do you deal with?  What services are available to you and your child?
I deal with the Cross Creek Family Counseling Center. This Center provides many different services to help me with my child. I can choose from a variety of ways to receive counseling. There is office, e-mail, telephone and Christian counseling. Each counseling type has a License Therapist for the most expensive rate and a Registered Intern or Grad Student for cheaper rates.
I also send my child to a Psychiatrist named Dr. Cat Dang. She has several different treatments for children with ODD which include medication management, therapy, or a combination of both. We currently provide the following types of therapy: cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and exposure therapy.
d. How did you find out about the above services?
I found out about these services through extensive research on the internet. Also, as I started counseling sessions with Cross Creek Family Counseling center, they were able to help me find different psychiatrists to treat my son.
e. What financial burden, if any, are you experiencing?
Using the counseling sessions at Cross Creek Family Counseling Center and sending my child to a Psychiatrist are causing a financial burden due to the high costs. At Cross Creek Family Counseling Center, the cheapest rate I can get for an office counseling session with a Grad Student is fifty to seventy-five dollars. The expenses for these counseling services add up to more than most families, and myself can afford.
f. What other information do you want to share?
Through treatment, I feel that he is getting better. I think counseling and seeing the Psychiatrist is helping both of us a lot. I feel that I learned much more about the disorder, and it helped me understand more about him. I try to be more consistent with rules and routines so that he will have more respect for adults. I think it is really important to receive outside help so that you don’t get overwhelmed with your child’s behavior.
